Louisiana walk managed by young onset
Times-Picayune Parkinson's walk-a-thon to be held Thursday March 27, 2003 By Eva Jacob Barkoff East Jefferson bureau The first annual "Stamp Out Parkinson's Disease" walk-a-thon will be held April 5 at 10 a.m. with registration beginning at 9 a .m.atLaSalle Park, 6600 Airline Drive, Metairie. Participants will have a choice of a one- or two-mile course to walk. The event is part of a national effort by the American Parkinson's Disease Association to raise awareness of the disease. All of the donations raised from approximately 50 walk-a-thons nationwide will go directly to research for finding a cure for Parkinson's disease. Dr. J. Rao, director of the Parkinson Center at the Louisiana State University Medical Center; Congressman David Vitter; and other state and local political and community leaders will participate. Harahan resident Michelle Lane, president of the Parkinson's Walk Committee, said there will be food, refreshments and live music by Nu-Beginnings following the race. There also will be door prizes as well as a raffle for a basketball autographed by Shaquille O'Neal. The registration fee is $15 per person and includes a T-shirt and the post-race event. Lane said she is "hoping for between 250 to 300 participants." "So far, we have almost 100 people registered," Lane said. "Every day, we have more people call about the walk and wanting to register." Lane also is the Louisiana state representative for the Young Onset Parkinson's Association. YOPA is a nationwide organization formed a little more than a year ago dedicated to addressing specific issues facing Parkinson's patients 55 and younger.
