UK: Stirling Hosts Parkinson's Disease Forum

A NATIONAL forum looking at possible future treatments for Parkinson's Disease 
will be hosted at the Tolbooth in
Stirling on Saturday, November 8.

Organised by local sufferer Ian Duncan on behalf of SPRING, a branch of the 
Parkinson's Disease Society, he hopes it
will provide a range of useful information, as well as some hope, for fellow 
sufferers, their friends and family.

An former triathlete, Ian said: "Even in the three years that I have had the 
disease there have been great developments
taking place and new avenues of research opening up."

The forum will bring together some of the greatest minds currently working on 
treatments and a possible cure for the
condition including Professor Ian Wilmut, one of the team behind the cloned 
Dolly the sheep.

There will also be the chance to hear about a new field of research called 
proteomics, and things are rounded off with
what is sure to be a very useful question and answer session.

The day's events are finished with a fundraising ceilidh and buffet with 
entertainment from top band The Picts.

Ian said: "Many people are travelling from all over the UK for this event and 
many are stopping over, so we hope to
show them a good night with all funds being donated to SPRING."

A raffle on the night will also offer the chance of winning some great prizes, 
including a mountain bike donated by
Stewart Wilson Cycles of Barnton Street, Stirling.

The event is open to all whether or not they are sufferers of Parkinson's 
themselves.

Parkinson's is a progressive condition affecting sufferers movements with 
symptoms ranging from mild tremor to muscle
stiffness and slowness of movement.

It affects around 12,000 in the UK, most of them aged over 50 though it's not 
uncommon for those of a relatively young
age also to suffer from the condition.
