Florida Research Center Speeds Along

Florida Research Center Speeds Along

MIAMI, Dec. 18 (UPI) -- The new Scripps Florida research center is scheduled to
begin operations in a temporary
biomedical facility as soon as June.

The center will expand the Scripps Research Institute's role of developing
medications for such ailments as
Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, asthma, diabetes and heart trouble.

That plan for June was discussed at an organizational meeting of an oversight
panel this week in Tallahassee.

The center, part of the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, Calif., was
first proposed in October. Since then the
state has come up with $369 million and Palm Beach County, where it will be
located, kicked in $200 million.

A permanent facility is expected to be built for occupancy in 2006.

The plan was pushed by Gov. Jeb Bush and its opponents are mostly Democrats in
the state Legislature. They question the
haste involved and whether it will create the jobs renaissance that has been
promised.
