Raitt, Cary Contribute To 'ParkinSong' Benefit
Edited By Jonathan Cohen. February 24, 2004, 11:10 AM ET

Bonnie Raitt, Caitlin Cary, David Crosby and Graham Nash are among the artists
who have contributed songs to a two-disc
singer/songwriter compilation that will raise funds to fight Parkinson's
Disease. "ParkinSong, Volume One: 38 Songs of
Hope," will be released May 11 via Ryko Distribution.

Produced by Lloyd Maines (Dixie Chicks, Jimmie Dale Gilmore), the set also
features songs by Steve Forbert, Dave Alvin,
Lucy Kaplansky, Dar Williams, Kelly Willis, Alejandro Escovedo,
eastmountainsouth and Neko Case, among others.

Some of the songs deal directly with Parkinson's, including Alvin's "The Man in
the Bed," written as a tribute to his
father. Others include Terri Hendrix' "Charlie Brown," inspired by "Peanuts"
creator and Parkinson's sufferer Charles
Schulz, and Tom Russell's "Muhammad Ali."

Proceeds will benefit the New Jersey-based ParkinSong Foundation, which uses
music to raise awareness and money to
research new and innovative therapies for treatment of Parkinson's Disease. The
non-profit organization was founded by
the three children of New Jersey schoolteacher Selma Litowitz, who has battled
the disease for more than a decade.

The ParkinSong Foundation began with a 2001 benefit concert in Lawrenceville,
N.J., where Litowitz taught high school
English. Comedian/actor Jon Stewart, a former pupil, hosted the first event,
while a second was held the following year
in nearby Newtown, Pa. The organization intends to stage higher profile
concerts on the East and West Coast later this
year, and will begin assembli ngtracksforasecondvolumeofthecompilation.
