N.J. To Create Stem-Cell Research Institute
N.J. To Create Stem-Cell Research Institute 2:27 PM EST Tuesday New Jersey Gov. James E. McGreevey announced plans to spend $6.5 million to create the country's first publicly funded research institute, which would develop new treatment for diseases like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's using human embryonic stem cells. The institute plan was included in his proposed $26.2 billion state budget unveiled Tuesday. McGreevey said the proposed New Jersey Institute for Stem Cell Research "will put New Jersey at the forefront of medical and pharmaceutical research in this country. And it will put us one step closer to fulfilling our dream -- that some scientist will find a cure for the incurable." Last month, New Jersey became the second state after California to enact legislation allowing for the use of embryonic stem cells in research aimed at developing new treatments for a variety of diseases.
