Re: DBS for PD and Dystonia: Long term Results
Dear Shekhar,
The 15% who benefit from DBS I'm not certain about.
Amongst the Parkinsons community in my corner of the world anyway, those that
have had DBS I either know or know of and they've all benefitted from the
procedure.
I certainly wasn't ready for DBS till the captain of the ship (me) felt it
necessary so if anybody asks me when the best time to have it is, my answer is
"when you're ready."
I didn't have a neuropsychologist test me for cognitive decline. I'd had it
done before. I think when it was done it was for research purposes so that may
have been used.
I believe however, it's usually done pre operatively.
As for pergolide I feel much better since stopping it, more able to sleep and
concentrate. Soon I'm to have an echogram to see if there is any valve damage.
There are other agonist drugs eg cabaser. I don't take any drugs now so can't
comment on cabasers effectiveness.
Cheers,
Lee

I would like to know why only 15% of pwps benefit from DBS
also what do the psycho cognitive tests determine?
I am 56 diagnosed 7 years ago with left side rigidity, now lead a reasonable
life with 7 doses of Stelavo (L dopa25/100 + comt ) plus pergolide (1mgX7).
I am wondering if early dbs is possible and desirable to reduce the drug intake
and thus save my heart form the effects of pergolide, Would some one please
comment and give me the benefit of their experience. I feel I am deteriorating
faster and feel this is my only route to survive until the "cure"

In fact, in France they have been performing DBS for about 10 years now. They
started doing it mainly on advanced cases. Now the tendency is to do it on
moderate cases and not after 70 years of age and never without extensive
psycho/ cognitive tests.
They reckon it can benefit about 15% of all PWPs
