Rigidity in Parkinson's Disease" at 1:00 PM on Friday
HPER Biomechanics Laboratory to feature Parkinson's Disease
presentation Friday

The Health, Physical Education and Recreation Biomechanics Laboratory
at UNO will host a presentation by Ruiping Xia on Friday.

Dr. Xia, an assistant professor of physical therapy education at UNMC
(University of Nebraska Medical Center), will present "Physiological
Mechanism of Rigidity in Parkinson's Disease" at 1 p.m. in room 213
at HPER. The event is free and open to the public.

Dr. Xia received her BS and MS degrees in biomedical engineering from
Tianjin University in China and received her Ph.D. in physiology from
the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom. Before she joined
UNMC, she worked as a research scientist at the Institute of
Neurology in Queen Square, London, and as a research associate at the
Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago.

Her current research is focused on exploring physiological mechanisms
underlying altered muscle tone in neurological disorders, such as
individuals with Parkinson's disease or with upper motor neuron
syndrome. She has previously worked on projects investigating muscle
coordination in rhythmic hand movements, and eye-hand coordination in
motor tracking tasks.

Her work brings together a variety of disciplines, including special
education, biology, engineering, psychology and biomechanics.
