My mom has these cramps also, that force her to have to stand up for periods of 
time.  They
come when she is sitting - mostly late afternoons and evenings -  and also 
during the night
when she is sleeping - causing her to wake up and have to stand to relive them.

In addition to PD+, she has been diagnosed with a pinched nerve in the 5th 
lumbar and nothing
has worked to relieve these cramps and leg pains so far.  We have tried 
cortisone shots and a
series of epidurals - all to no avail.

While seeing a foot doctor (for drop foot which occured while she was in the 
hospital in early
95) for unrelated reasons, she recommended us to see a certified pedorthist, 
thinking that
possible modifications to shoes would help relieve the pressure, thus reducing 
the cramping.

When the pedorthist saw my mom, she said modifications to the shoe wouldnt help 
relieve the
pressure, but wants her to see a specialist (MD)  in Physical Medicine & 
Rehabilitation (PM&R)
at Oschner Medical Center in New Orleans (where we are).  Apparently, this 
doctor is a
specialist in muscle spasticity and the pedorthist thinks there may be 
something he can do in
addition to attending a series of customized physical therapy workshops there.

To make a long story short, we are going to see Dr. Kauffman at Oschner on 
March 23.  If
anything good comes of this effort, I will be glad to pass on any information 
at that time.

p.s..  Quinine water?  Does this work at all?  Never heard of using it as a 
medication for leg
cramps.
