Re: pd and cd and suicide
janet-Serotonin and norepinephrine place a major role in
depression, but re: dopamine:
"Some studies have reviewed the hypothesis that dopamine
hypofunction may play a significant role in depressive
illness. D'haenen and Bossuyt reported an increase in D2
receptor density in depressed patients. These studies,
viewed in the context of antidepressant effects reported
with the use of dopamine agonists bromocriptine, piribedil,
and pergolide, further strengthen the hypothesis that the
dopamine system is an important mechanism in at least some
depressed patients. The therapeutic use of stimulants in
selected patients appears to have a growing theoretical and
empirical basis, particularly in view of the limited
dopaminergic effects of most standard antidepressant
medications." -p.513 Textbook of Psychopharmacology
The American Psychiatric Press (1998)
And, yes, Schizophrenic patients get depressed. They also
get Parkinsonian side-effects ( an old-fashioned example is
the Thorazine Shuffle) this is not so surprising when you
consider the fact that they are taking meds to limit the
excess dopamine in their brains. Carole
