WEMOVE: PD: Simplified Quality of Life Measure

The EQ-5D - a generic quality of life measure -
is a useful instrument to measure quality of life
in patients with Parkinson's disease
A Schrag, C Selai, M Jahanshahi, N Quinn
J Neurol, Neurosurg, Psychiatry 2000;69:67-73

A five-item non-PD-specific questionnaire is a useful measure of quality of
life in Parkinson's disease, according to this study.

The EQ-5D is a validated measure of quality of life consisting of five
questions concerning mobility, self-care, usual activities, pain/discomfort,
and anxiety/depression.

A visual analog scale indicating general health is also included. The
questionnaire is included in the article.

One-hundred-twenty-four PD patients completed the EQ-5D, SF-36 (a longer
generic health questionnaire), the PDQ-39 (a disease-specific measure), the
Beck Depression Inventory, and other measures.

The authors report, "The EQ-5D summary score correlated strongly with the
PDQ-39 (p<0.0001), as well as the physical score of the SF-36 (p<0.0001)."

EQ-5D scores were also correlated with Hoehn & Yahr stage, Schwab and England
disability scale, UPDRS motor score, and depression score.

The authors note, "The EQ-5D may be a particularly suitable generic instrument
for patients with Parkinson's disease as it is a very mobility-based
questionnaire," and its five questions address core areas that are particularly
relevant to PD.
