Hoaxes promising email tracking by high profile corporations and large
cash payoffs have been greeted with the litany, "there's no such thing".
Truth is often stranger than fiction. According to the Privacy
Foundation, standard JavaScript can be used to wiretap email. The hidden code
copies text from forwarded emails (including that long list of
addresses) and sends them to the originator's web server. The exploit
has been known to exist since 1998 but was only recently reported.
Though entirely illegal, the exploit could be used to harvest email
addresses or retrieve confidential information for illicit purposes. As
with email viruses, HTML-enabled mail clients with JavaScript enabled
are vulnerable.
