Elizabeth,

My father has this too.  A retired physician friend of his thinks it is
Raynaud's, and it happens whenever he is cold.  I don't think medical
science yet knows what brings it on.  When it comes on, he simply tries to
warm up his hands and fingers until the natural color returns.
