Charlie, that's exactly what we do.  I forgot to mention that all meds taken
by the patient must be recorded - and it is the nurse's responsibility to
remind the patient that their meds are due at a specified time and to ask if
the med was taken.

Once again, it is important to determine whether the patient is capable of
taking their own meds.  Since folks take meds at home on their own, the
liability rests with whether the staff has determined sufficiently if  the
patient's condition has changed to the extent that they are no longer alert
enough to follow a medication regimen.
