Re: Mirapex DOES OR DOES NOT Slow Progression of PD ??

Hi Emily,

At the moment there are THREE studies in the process of being published that
are investigating the possibilities of a slowing down effect on PD. The
first is the just published study in JAMA with pramipexole. The second is
about ropinirole and results will be presented at the AAN-meeting next week.
Third is a study about Coenzyme Q10 that will be published later this year.

Though according to some these studies indicate that these meds slow the
progression of PD in some degree, there still needs more research be done to
establish in what doses the slowing down effect would be optimal.

BTW: recently the phase III clinical trial for TCH346 (developed in the
Netherlands) started. This stopped the progression IN ANIMALS completely.
TCH346 is from the same chemical group as selegiline and rasagiline.
Selegiline slowed progression in animals too, but not in humans. In animals
the slowing down effect of rasagiline is about 5x that of seligiline, and
TCH346 about 100x that of selegiline. Lets hope this time it will work in
humans too. The first results of this phase III trial will be available at
the end of 2004.

Hans.
