statins=PD????
On the "Ask the Dr. Abe" List there is a survey going on re possible relationship between statins and PD. My grandfather had PD and they didn't have cholesterol lowering drugs then. I took Lopid (gemfibrozile) (not a statin)for several yrs to lower triglycerides. Was diagnosed with PD 6 yrs ago. Went off Lopid when AI went on Evista for osteoporosis cause it also lowers cholesterol. Went back on it 6 mos ago when tris were elevated. My condition has deteriorated dramatically since being on Lopid again. Now have tremor in "good" right leg, terrible fatigue, pain in muscles. I'm going off it for 6 wks to see if fatigue and muscle pain improve, as they are possible side effects of Lopid. I figured it was all PD, but in light of the fact that we are all so different re progression and reaction to meds, I think it is worth asking - were/are any of you on statins? There was a German study 7 yrs ago that showed a relationship, but nothing was known about it here. Dr. Abe is asking people to write him and tell him if you were/are on them/ We know their was PD before statins, but I for one, am going off Lopid. The oral glutathione seemed to help me initially, just like Sinemet, then not too much effect. If you don't want to get into this on the List, just email me if this concurrence applies to you. It all helps me make decisions as to what to do.
