Family Clusters
High school student Becky Potts wrote about a possible science project looking for a genetic factor in PD. Becky, you're right, a serious study would be too big to handle while you're still busy with school. But researchers find that details of PD in family clusters often differ from one family to another. So it would be very important if you could find PWP other than your grandfather in your own family. Often, in old people especially, signs of PD go unnoticed. Nobody likes nosy strangers looking for such things, but as a family member you might be able to do so without the embarrassment. Does (or did) any member have a noticable tremor in one hand or foot? Odd shuffling walk, maybe dragging one foot? Fail to swing arms naturally when walking? Slurred or soft speech? Habitual stooped posture with knees bent? Sit without moving or changing expression? Those are some of the non-disabling signs you might look for. If you find some, I suggest approaching your grandfather's neurologist for help finding professional literature and current authors, whom you might write to. Good luck, Joe -- J. R.
