To Mercedes re publishing off-list mail/vote on pigs

Mercedes - you wrote:

<< I understand that this was a very different case but someone got an un
requested email, made it public and debated it with anyone who chose to
comment. The problem that I have is I am now afraid to answer someone
privately for fear of it being published to the list. All I can say is
someone had a wonderful idea to bring people together with a "common cause".
I wish it could work. The thought of people dropping out now is sad.

I can't imagine that you will ever write something someone would object to,
but I can say from experience that many list members have heard from this
particular writer (who is now not a listmember but apparently still monitors
list mail); they can tell you that he makes a habit of writing nasty letters
to people he disagrees with. I hesitated to even answer your letter because
I didn't want to hear from him again, but I can assure you that if I hear
from this particular writer off list, it will immediately be sent to the list
as a whole. I can't imagine every doing that with another writer, but
there's a long history here.

Meanwhile, I've been busy deleting all the pig messages (I do appreciate the
accurate headers), but wouldn't mind if there were fewer to delete. I enjoy
humor as much as amyone, but am not at a place in my life right now that I
can take time for that much off-topic mail. My husband, the PWP, finds it
more difficult to read and delete, and has about given reading the listmail.
