It is, or used to be, possible to read and post to newsgroups using
only e-mail.  There is a classic FAQ on the subject of accessing the
internet via e-mail alone - send the following:

send usenet/news.answers/internet-services/access-via-email

to mail-server@xxxxxxxxxxxx for a copy.  However, this mode of access
may be facing obsolescence (it's all of 5 years old!).  I'm going to try
it to see if it still works.
