Deanna-- sorry to hear things are no better with your husband-to-be's mother. But if you and he are aware of the situation, that's good, because, as you say, you can help to "make up for it". The pattern between the parents is long-established, and probably little you--or their son--can do to change it so "modelling" a better behavior is the best option, it would seem.
