Re: Cogentin/Benzotropin Mesylate?

Bryce,
I pulled out the drug handbook and came up with the following:
Cogentin (benztropine mesylate) action is unknown. Thought to block central
cholinergic receptors, helping to balance cholinergic activity in basal
ganglia. Onse occurs with 15 minutes of IM use or within 1-2 hours of oral
use. Peak is unknown. Effects persist 24 hours. For Parkinsonism dose is
0.5 to 6mg by mouth or IM daily. Initial dose is 0.5mg to 1mg, increased by
0.5mg every 5-6 days. Dosage adjusted for individual requirements. Adverse
reactions (side effects) are highlighted as constipation, others seem to be
dose related. Do not take with amantadine, phenothiazines, tricyclic
antidepressants to avoid confusion and hallucinations. Should be given after
meals to prevent gastrointestinal distress.Never discontinue drug abruptly
Hope this helps some.
Kathy.
