Inquiry: good shoe brand\type for PD patient

My father has PD, and is trying to find shoes to help
with his walking. He has a shuffling walk, but does
not require a cane. Shoes with rubber soles, especially
soles with divisions to improve traction, cause trouble
when he walks on a carpet. Also, he has some swelling
in his ankles, which sometimes makes it hard for him
to put his shoes on. He wants to find shoes that are
lightweight but sturdy, won't catch on the carpet
or floor, and are easy to get into a car with. (Sometimes
his shoes catch on the car door's opening.)
Does anyone have experience with a shoe type/brand
that is good for Parkinson's patients? What are you most
comfortable with?
Does anyone use a support/elastic stocking to counteract
swelling? I've heard that people do this for varicose veins.
     Thanks for any help/information.
                                        -Bill
